Debbie Gibson in the 80s

Lost in the ’80s? Debbie Gibson’s Life Today

By: Matt

Plenty of great teen idols rocked the world during the ’80s. While most remember the stars who graced the silver screen, some contributed to the pop culture zeitgeist with music. One great example is Debbie Gibson.

At just 16 years old, she released her debut album, “Out of the Blue” (1987). When her second album, “Electric Youth,” came out in 1989, she skyrocketed to superstardom! Known for hits like “Lost in Your Eyes” and “We Could Be Together,” Gibson was the ultimate young singer-songwriter. She wrote all her songs herself and rocked a signature style with memorable hats.

Debbie Gibson continued to release albums throughout her career and even took up some acting roles. While she may not be a household name today, Gibson’s career is nothing short of impressive.

Let’s look at her career and what she’s doing today.

A Nearly Four-Decade Music Career

Gibson’s music career started when she was just a teen. She quickly became the “it” girl of the music industry, producing several great hits. What makes Gibson unique is that she wrote all her songs, which wasn’t the norm in the ’80s. This was long before the Taylor Swifts of the world began to dominate, making Gibson a true trailblazer.

When her song “Foolish Beat” hit the number-one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, she became the youngest female artist to write, produce and perform a chart-topping hit.

Gibson’s third album, “Anything Is Possible,” was released in 1990 as music interests changed and the signature sound of the ’80s became less popular. As a result, it was the first of her albums not to reach the top ten charts. Of course, it was still a great success. The same applies to other albums she released during the 1990s and 2000s.

Debbie Gibson released 11 albums throughout her career. She took a hiatus from music after 2010’s “Ms. Vocalist.” However, she came back in full force with the release of “The Body Remembers” in 2021. That album spawned the single “Girls Night Out,” which made a splash on the Billboard Dance Club Song charts. With a fresh sound, Gibson continues to write and produce.

Acting and TV Roles

Gibson didn’t let her success in the 1980s prevent her from pursuing other ambitions. According to an interview in 2021, Gibson’s first dream was to be a Broadway star! She got her chance in the 1990s. Gibson starred in many productions, including “Grease,” “Les Miserables,” “Chicago” and “Cabaret.”

It didn’t stop there. Gibson also dove into TV and film. Her film roles include zany films like “Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus” (2009) and “Mega Shark Versus Mecha Shark” (2014). On TV, she had guest spots on “Lucifer” (2016-2021) and “Acting Dead” (2014). She’s also appeared as herself on many shows.

Diving into Reality TV

Younger audiences who weren’t around when her music was playing on every radio station in the 1980s may be familiar with Debbie Gibson’s foray into reality TV. The singer/songwriter/actress competed on several reality shows like “Dancing with the Stars” (2017-Present), “The Masked Singer” (2019-Present), “The Celebrity Apprentice” (2008-2017) and more.

She’s had great runs on competition shows, proving her multi-faceted talent. While some health complications prevented her from snatching the main prize on “Dancing with the Stars,” Gibson has always shined in her appearances.

Personal Life

As of 2024, Debbie Gibson is in her 50s and continues to do what she loves: Entertain. Whether that’s through acting, music or reality show appearances, she’s still going strong.

One thing that fans love the most about Gibson is her openness about her personal life. Like any other celebrity, Gibson guards the details. However, she’s not scared to speak her truth. Gibson has never been married and has no kids. According to her, that’s the way she wants it.

While she talked about having a husband and children when interviewed in the ’80s, Gibson has never felt the need to get married. Gibson is happily single and doesn’t feel like she’s missing out on anything, a sentiment many share.

An ’80s Icon Who Continues to Evolve

Decades after being a teen star in the ’80s, Debbie Gibson continues to make waves. She’s no longer that girl singing songs with her guitar while wearing a cool hat!

Today, Debbie Gibson is a woman who’s not afraid of change or trying something new. She’s still an avid music maker, but Gibson continually pushes herself outside that ’80s mold to live life to the fullest and have fun.
